A Day At The Pool

When Melanie returned home later that evening she saw Ruby, Saphire, and Onyx all eating dinner together. It warmed her heart to see her children enjoying eachothers company. They were her joy and her life. The warnth they brought her dried up her remaining tears.

Once they all went to bed the house seemed almost as it was twenty years ago. The girls in one room and onyx in another, except when they were little it was the twins who shared the room.

There was only one thing missing from the house that night, but Melanie tried not to think of that.

The following morning Ruby woke up before anyone in the house. She made herself a bowl of cereal and ate it with her eyes half closed. Today was the first day of work in the new town and she didn’t want to be late.

She had joined the military. She knew that was the path that would lead her to a career as an astronaut and nothing would please her more than being in the sky surrounded by stars, just like her dad.

Once the rest of the family woke up they also found things to do. Saphire went into the garden and Melanie followed, hoping to find out if her daughter was going to be able to handle the move.

Onyx immediately took off to explore the town and see about creating a social life for himself. It didn’t take long for him to find a pool with a couple of people in it and without thinking he jumped in.

Not being shy he immediately swam over to the two people. He skipped introductions and asked the guy if he’d like to join him in a contest to see who could hold their breath the longest. He agreed and the girl above watched the two as they went to the bottom of the pool.

Onyx held his breath as long as he could. It turned out a lot harder then he thought and he couldn’t stand it any longer. He kicked to the surface and the other guy followed shortly after being sure Onyx was no longer under water. He celebrated a little and Onyx let him, if it had been Onyx who won he would have celebrated too.

While the three swam in place and talked for a while some other girl swam over to the little group.

Without warning she splashed the girl who had already been there and the other guy seemed to dodge it just in time. Onyx just stared at the scene before him in shock.

The small splash seemed to quickly turn into a water war and that was when Onyx decided the other guy had the right idea. He took off in search of another pool to hang out in.

It didn’t take long to find another pool and this one seemed to have more people surrounding it. Some people there looked friendly and familiar, but one familiar face made a huge pit of anger form deep within his chest.

A McGruber. The feud between the McGormick family and the McGruber family ran deep within his veins. Even though he didn’t know what initially started the feud growing up he did hear about Skeezix McGruber and his slime ball ways.

He knew that it was Mr. McGruber who called in that terrible day, the reason he had no father in his life, and the thought of that family being in town made him sick.
